Snail shells have been found in archaeological excavations, an indication that snails were eaten since prehistoric times. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">It has been found that since the Paleolithic era, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">molluscs <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">have been an <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">important source of food for humans<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">. In Greece and Cyprus snails have been known since antiquity and are considered to be a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">fine delicacy<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">Fossils of snails <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">have been found in archaeological excavations after thousands of years in Akrotiri, Santorini and Paphos, Cyprus. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">Ancient Greeks loved the snail both gastronomically and scientifically. During the <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"><b>Minoan period <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">the snail was a <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"><b>nutritious <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">and <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"><b>popular dish for the Cretans <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">and then for all the ancient Greeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">Aristotle <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">described the snail in detail and invented a kind of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">spoon<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">, which carries a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">spike <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">to the tip of his grip, where the snail\u2019s body can be <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">removed intact from the shell<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">. <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"><b>Hippocrates <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">studied the <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"><b>properties <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">of <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"><b>slime mucus <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">and praised its <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">effectiveness <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">in <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">hydrating <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">skin<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">relieving skin irritations <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">redness<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">, <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"><b>wound healing<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">, and <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"><b>treating skin disorders<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">. He also considered their consumption beneficial for various stomach disorders. Hippocrates and Galen considered snails to be beneficial for the treatment of herniation and hypersensitivity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">The <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">ancient Greeks had noticed the behavior of snails <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">during the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">courtship phase <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">where each snail <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">launches its arrow to stimulate the other\u2019s genital area<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">. It is said, therefore, that the view of the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">wandering god of love<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">Eros<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">, who throws his arrows on the lovers, comes from this observation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">Athenaeus in \u201cDeepnosophists\u201d also refers to snails, while Alexis the comedian mentions them as an <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\"><b>aphrodisiac food<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"el-GR\">.
